But 'likely' is not good enough to swing a hammer — the only safe way to confirm is a professional assessment, because getting it wrong can sag floors, crack walls, or worse.
Signs a wall may be load-bearing
- It runs perpendicular (across) the direction of the floor joists above.
- It sits above a main beam, teleposts, or a foundation wall in the basement.
- It's near the center of the house, where interior loads usually land.
- It's a wall that continues up through multiple floors in the same spot.
- It's thicker than the partition walls around it, or has a beam or bulkhead above.
Signs a wall is probably NOT load-bearing
- It runs parallel to the floor joists above.
- It's a short partition that doesn't align with anything below or above.
- It was clearly added in a later renovation and carries nothing above it.
Why you still need a professional
Joist direction can change between rooms, past renovations hide original structure, and some walls carry load you can't see from below. Before removing any wall, a contractor confirms the structure and — if it's load-bearing — a structural engineer sizes the beam and posts that will carry the load. That engineering is also what a building permit requires.
